Petra emailed me to say that we would be developing a one page mentoring plan for NSF.  Beginning April 2010, all NSF proposals that request funding for a postdoc will require a mentoring plan.  There Since I finished my defense, a lot of people have been asking me "So... what are you going to do next?"  I'm not sure what they expect me to answer.  Disneyland?  More travel?  Work?  *GASP*  Another PhD?   

To be fair, no one who has completed a PhD has asked me this question. It is a form of sculpture using wood and paint.  The artist may draw on their personal experiences, or use the medium to comment on society in general.  For example, last weekend I saw a piece that commemorated the bombs that exploded in Maputo last March. There are two sessions per day so that all the children that are able have a chance to attend.  None of the students wear uniforms, but each family must pay a fee at the beginning of the year. Fire helps create and maintain savanna.  Early European maps, dating from the 1500s, label the region as Terra dos Fumos - Land of Smokes.  In my own experience, a column of smoke on the horizon is a daily occurrence. It is a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon and Hashers are drinkers with a running problem.  get out to see places that I might not go on my own.  After the run, we go back to the Maputo Aeroclube (where we're based) for a drink. And yes, that is a parquet wooden floor.  The black mark under my desk came with the apartment and just tells me that the previous renter had their desk in the same spot and had dirty shoes.  The walls are spackle over cement, making hanging things difficult. It was pretty intense.  Tatana Mukhavele is not going to cut us any slack.  There are many new sounds and lots of verb prefixes and suffixes.Some of the new sounds include a whistle (svi), a click (q), and another sound that gets made at the back and roof of your mouth (hlw).
